"Gravity. It Isn't Just a Good Idea. It's the Law."

In 1986 I created a full color version of the poster, borrowed $5,000 from my brother-in-law (Thanks Greg!) and had an initial print run of 10,000 made. I placed some ads in a handful of science and sci-fi magazines, but sales were slow.

With the backlog of cartoons from my three-year feature in Asimov's, I decided about that time to develop a handful of them into a line of postcards. I picked my twelve favorites and added color. But I had learned a good lesson with the poster. Before I committed to printing up thousands of postcards, I set about to get a distributor who could get the postcards into stores.

Though all the postcards sold well, the Gravity outsold all of them ten to one. And when I had them printed, I added ordering info on the back for the poster. That's when the poster really took off.
